The Women Making History at City2Shore Real Estate

Every year, March is designated Women's History Month by Presidential proclamation. Women have often been overlooked for their contributions to our culture and society and the month of March is set aside to honor women's achievements in American history.

The celebration of women's history was originally just a week-long celebration organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given and hundreds of students participated in a "Real Women" essay contest. Over the years many schools and communities across the country started to adopt the idea and host their own festivities. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as Women's History Week. Six years later, the National Women's History Project successfully petitioned Congress to have the event expand for the entire month.

In honor of Women's History Month, we spent this last month highlighting six women who are currently blazing trails and making history at City2Shore. We are so grateful for everything they have contributed to the company and we hope that their efforts and achievements inspire other women in the workplace.


Shelley Frody - Owner and CEO of City2Shore Real Estate

Shelley started her real estate career as a Realtor in West Michigan. After working in the industry for several years, Shelley and her husband Steve felt called to start their own real estate brokerage. In February of 2011, City2Shore was born. Shelley's vision was to build a real estate company that was truly invested in the agents' success and inspired them to build a profitable and sustainable real estate career. After four years of growth and success as a local brokerage, Shelley wanted to offer other brokers and entrepreneurs the opportunity to replicate that same success by opening their own brokerage. In 2015, that vision became a reality with the launch of City2Shore National Franchises.

Shelley has also been committed to giving back to the community. In 2011, Shelley played an integral part in creating and sponsoring the Saturday Slip-N-Slide, which was a family-oriented event that gave back to the community in a constructive way. The event featured dozens of water activities with the main attraction being four 150 ft water slides. The event ran for 9 consecutive years and raised thousands of dollars for local charities. Shelley has also been very active in the local real estate community and served as the President of the West Michigan Women's Council of Realtors in 2015.

We are extremely appreciative of the leadership and vision Shelley brings to City2Shore and our local community.


Lori Hoorn - Development Coordinator of Operations and Executive Assistant to Shelley Frody

Lori joined City2Shore in October of 2011 as one of the first staff members and is a major reason for City2Shore's growth and success. She currently serves as Shelley Frody's Executive Assistant and is also the Development Coordinator of Operations for City2Shore National Franchises. Lori has been integral in setting up our office systems and procedures for onboarding agents and staff as well as managing the day-to-day operations of the business.

It's very hard to find areas of City2Shore Lori isn't involved in. She facilitates the franchise recruitment process and helps onboard our franchisees, supports our agents as they learn our systems and begin their careers, trains other brokers on how to manage and maintain office operations, and supports the IT needs of the company and franchise. Because of her vast knowledge of our operations, she ensures that we use our resources wisely as we continue to grow and develop new systems.

Even though she works behind the scenes, it's very obvious that Lori is the oil that keeps our engines running smoothly. We are extremely grateful for everything that she has done for us, our agents, and franchisees.


Laura Carr - Director of Human Resources and Staff Development

Laura started with City2Shore in the fall of 2010 before the company even had a name. She was the first admin of the company and became the Executive Assistant to Steve Frody. In this role, Laura developed a detailed process to manage Steve's pending files which included everything from coordinating communications, ordering title, and scheduling closings. As a result, Steve was able to nearly triple his business and reach top-producer status. Laura wanted every agent to be able to receive the same type of support that Steve received which sparked her to create and develop what is now our Agent Support system.

In 2012 Laura got her real estate license while also working part-time as a staff member and Director of Agent Support where she trained and oversaw other Agent Support staff. Laura's real estate business began to grow over the years and in 2015 she went back to school to receive her Broker license. The following year her husband, Chris Carr, joined her and together they started their own team called the Carr Group. For four consecutive years, Carr Group has received the Top-Producer Diamond Award for over 10+ Million in sales. Though Laura's real estate career has taken off, she still works with City2shore as the Director of HR and Staff Development, overseeing three offices here in West Michigan.

Laura most enjoys working with people in any aspect and loves to see them grow. She is a mentor to several realtors and is always making sure that our staff is well taken care of. She is dedicated to building a healthy work-life balance and enjoys spending time with her husband Chris, her 3 children Christian, Elizabeth, Caden, & daughter-in-law Kelsey along with family & friends. In her downtime, you can typically find her hunting, fishing, boating, and cooking. She looks at life as a gift and strives to make the most out of it.

We are so proud of what Laura has been able to achieve over the last 10 years and are thankful for her contributions.


Larissa Frody - Associate Broker and Agent Success Coach

Larissa joined City2Shore in June of 2011 as an assistant to her parents, Steve and Shelley Frody. After a year of first-hand experience in the real estate industry, Larissa decided to get her real estate license when she turned 18 years old. It would have been easy for her to live in her parents' shadow, but Larissa set high goals for herself early on and wanted to make a name for herself. After just three years as a Realtor, Larissa received her broker's license in 2015, becoming the youngest real estate broker in the state of Michigan.

Since then, Larissa has been nothing short of a trailblazer here at City2Shore. She has been heavily involved in developing and updating our JumpStart program, a comprehensive online course designed to educate and prepare agents for any and all situations. She also hosts our weekly agent ed series where agents can get real estate lessons in a classroom-like atmosphere. Larissa currently serves as the Agent Success coach where she assists new agents through the onboarding process and coaches them throughout their first year in real estate.

The impact Larissa has made on our agents is immeasurable and we are so grateful for what she has helped us build.


Abbey Vogelaar - Director of Agent Support Systems

Abbey joined City2Shore in April of 2015 as the first full-time agent support team member. Because her role requires her to be so involved in the real estate transaction process, Abbey has been monumental in helping us advance our Agent Support system and making it more efficient and effective. Her knowledge and experience definitely shows in the stat column, as she has closed over 2,700 transactions over the last 6 years! She also helps lead and manage an Agent Support team that provides support for three offices and over 50 agents.

Abbey was promoted in 2020 to Director of Agent Support Systems, which was a natural fit. In this role, she ensures that the quality of agent support is consistent across all of our offices and franchises. She helps train our new franchisees and their admins on how agent support functions as well as presents our model to potential franchisees.

Because of Abbey and her efforts, Agent Support has consistently been one of our most valuable systems which have helped us recruit more agents and franchises to the company. The value that Abbey brings to our team is priceless and we are so grateful to have her as part of our C2S family.


Amanda Volkers - Owner and Broker of City2Shore Prestige Home Group

Amanda grew up in West Michigan and received her Bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University. Following college, Amanda worked as a General Manager of various hotel brands around Grand Rapids, but with a growing family, Amanda was looking for a career change. In 2004 Amanda got her real estate license and worked as a Realtor for 11 years before receiving her broker's license in 2015.

Amanda went on to build a very successful real estate business. As an associate broker with another local real estate brokerage, Amanda was able to build a small team that quickly established a reputation for exceptional service. Despite the success, Amanda felt called to pursue her dreams of owning her own brokerage.

In 2018, Amanda took the leap and purchased a City2Shore franchise, becoming one of our first franchise members. She was able to quickly build on her previous success and has grown from 4 agents to 15 agents in just the last year. Amanda's brokerage, Prestige Home Group, is dedicated to integrity, compassion, and service and focuses on their client's needs, not just the sale. Amanda has gone the extra mile to mentor her agents and help them become some of the best in the industry. For her, this isn't just a job, but a career she loves to do every day.

Amanda has been one of City2Shore's biggest advocates and is often reaching out to our prospective franchisees to tell them about her experience and success. Her passion for helping others shines bright and we are truly grateful to have Amanda on our team.
